CHAPTER EIGHT

CANDICE WOKE WITH a start. She’d been having a lovely dream, where she was kissing Jimmy and could still feel his lips against hers. But the sensation faded as her aches and pains claimed her attention—her pounding head, her throbbing ankle.

As her eyes adjusted to the light, she realized she was in her father’s old bedroom and she was in one of her pyjama shirts, but still wearing her bra and underwear.

What the heck happened?

She tried to roll over and get up, but couldn’t.

Candice managed to grab her glasses, which were sitting on a side table, and as she put them on the world came into greater focus. As she looked around the room, she noticed that Jimmy was slumped over and snoozing in her father’s old recliner by the window. Her heart skipped a beat and she touched her lips. Had it been a dream or had it really happened?

“Jimmy?” she whispered.

He woke with a start. “Hey, you okay? You need something?”

“Answers,” she said and cleared her throat. “And maybe some water.”

“Well, you’re due for some acetaminophen. Hold on, I’ll be back.” He got up and quickly left the room, returning a few moments later with medication and a big glass of water. “Take two. Dr. Zwart said you have a grade-one concussion and you’re going to need a bit of time to heal.”

Well, that explained the hazy memories and the bizarre dreams. Since he wasn’t mentioning their kiss, it must’ve been a dream, but there was a part of her that suspected it hadn’t been. That it had really happened and even though she would be mortified if that was the case, she was hoping it had.

“A concussion? I can’t take time off for a concussion. I’m supposed to do the backcountry loop on the weekend.”

“Yeah, even if you didn’t have a concussion, your ankle is kind of really sprained. I doubt you’re doing a hike on the weekend.”

Candice groaned as she got a closer look at her purple-and-red swollen ankle.

“What the heck happened?” she asked.

Jimmy sat down on the edge of her bed. “You stepped into a hollow the wrong way, rolled your ankle and face-planted onto the road in the campground.”

Candice groaned. “Are you serious?”

“Yes, and we’ve had this conversation before.”

She winced and vaguely remembered bits and pieces of last night, but a lot of it was a blur. “Where’s my car?”

“Ranger Matt drove it to the RCMP office. It’s just down the street, so I’ll grab it later.”

“You stayed here all night?” she asked.

He nodded. “I did.”

Heat bloomed in her cheeks as she looked at her state of undress. “You—you...undressed me?”

“Yes.” There was a twinkle in his eyes. “You were a bit, uh, sick...on your uniform.”

She groaned and lied down again. “I’m so sorry.”

“You weren’t sick on me,” he teased.

“I’m so embarrassed.”

“Don’t be.”

The thought of him undressing her brought a blush to her cheeks. Her body thrummed and she wished she could remember more of it. She had no doubt he was a gentleman
